JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, MAN

The Frequence have been releasing records the same way they play shows — on their own terms, at their own pace, and without apologizing for any of it.

It started with the self-titled EP (2019): four songs, maximum volume, zero fanfare. Raucous and lively, biting and occasionally sweet — a gut-punch of a debut that remains the perfect introduction to a band that refuses to be put in a box and would probably set the box on fire anyway.

Fox and the Hens (2023) is three tracks of the band at their most feral. Fast and punchy, with Jenn Nau’s voice cutting through the mix like she’s got somewhere to be and you’re in the way. Every Step sneaks up on you with a pop hook and then leaves you slightly devastated. The Right Way is a 1960s dance party that somehow makes you want to grab a stranger and twirl — charming, nostalgic and sweet. The title track is defiant and powerful. A shot across the bow. You don’t know them but you goddamn will.

Mockingbird Girl (2025) is The Frequence with more room to operate, and they use every inch of it. Five songs that sprawl a little, breathe a little, and hit harder for it. Forget Them is the blueprint — groovy, slinky, R&B-inflected, with guitar stabs and drum barks that land like exclamation points — and it’s a template the band keeps stretching until it nearly breaks, and then keeps pushing anyway. Mercy and Whim coils itself tight and then detonates. The title track is a slow, bluesy, keyboard-driven burn that feels bigger than the room it was recorded in. Together they make a case that The Frequence aren’t just loud and fast — they’re really f*cking good. You may not know them, but you goddamn will.
